The history of Eger Castle began after the Tatar invasion. In order to protect the bishop's seat, founded in the early 11th century, a stone castle was built from 1248. The church centre built in the castle flourished in the 15th century, during the Renaissance.

In the 16th century, the castle was an important stronghold of the border defence system of the Kingdom of Hungary, which was divided into three parts by the Turkish invasion, and was the "shield of Europe". The most famous event in its thousand-year history is the siege of 1552, when the 2,000-strong defending army led by István Dobó defended the castle against a Turkish force of nearly 30.

The victory was first immortalised by Sebestyén Lantos Tinódi in his historical song, which became part of the national memory through further literary and artistic works. The role of the defenders of Eger in the Hungarian heroic cult was further reinforced by Géza Gárdonyi's powerful novel and film, The Stars of Eger.

In 1958, the István Dobó Castle Museum moved to Eger Castle, where it still operates today, and has been preserving the cult of Eger Castle ever since. It offers numerous exhibitions, cultural and tourist programmes.
